Nightlatch Accessories

A nightlatch can be found inside the door but still fail to work properly because of one small part. A bent connecting bar, missing cylinder screw or unsuitable strike plate is enough to leave a front door difficult to lock, unable to latch cleanly, or insecure after a repair. Replacing the correct accessory is often all that is needed — there is no sense changing a complete rim lock when the fault is confined to the fitting hardware.

Nightlatch accessories cover the parts needed to repair, adapt and refit traditional rim locks and British Standard nightlatches. Rim cylinder housings are useful when the external cylinder section has been damaged or needs replacing, while connecting screws secure the cylinder and lock case together through the door. It is worth checking the make and model before ordering, particularly on established Yale, CISA and Asec installations, as seemingly similar parts are not always interchangeable.

Door thickness catches people out regularly. If a nightlatch is being moved to a replacement timber door, or fitted to a door with added panelling, a standard tail bar may not reach the lock body. An extra-long cylinder connecting bar provides the necessary reach without improvising a fix that can leave the cylinder loose or unreliable.

The opening direction matters as well. Standard strikes are not always suitable for outward-opening doors or awkward frame details. Long-lip and reverse-angle strike plates help the latch engage properly, preventing the door from bouncing open or needing to be pulled tight before it will secure. These are practical repair parts for rim nightlatches; they are not generally used with replacement cylinder locks for UPVC doors, which normally operate through a multipoint lock.

Where a front door is being upgraded, accessories should complement the main locking arrangement rather than be treated as security products in their own right. High security mortice locks for external doors and 5-lever deadlocks that meet insurance requirements remain separate considerations, but correctly fitted nightlatch components make sure the existing rim lock does its job every time the door closes.
