Long Shackle Padlocks

The shackle length on a padlock isn't a detail — it's often the reason an installation works or doesn't. Chain links, fencing rails, rolled steel door handles, locker hasps with wide staple loops: all of them require more clearance than a standard shackle provides. Buy the wrong profile and the padlock physically won't engage. It's one of those purchases where getting the geometry right matters as much as the security spec.

Long shackle padlocks carry a taller loop — typically 60mm to 80mm of clearance depending on the model — which makes them the practical solution when there's material to thread through rather than a straight hasp-and-staple setup. That's why they're used so regularly on cycle storage, gate chains, locker banks, and scaffolding security, where the fixing point isn't a standard hasp but something with more depth or thickness to it.

The brass options from Asec, CISA, and Squire cover the bulk of everyday requirements. A 5-pin long shackle brass padlock is a solid choice for gates, sheds, and external cabinet doors where the threat level is moderate and cost matters. Squire's Lion range in particular has a well-earned reputation for consistency at that mid-range price point. For anything where the padlock will be outdoors permanently and exposed to weather, the ABUS 70IB marine grade model with its protective cover is the version to specify — the keyway cover alone extends the working life considerably in wet conditions.

Where the application demands more, the ABUS Granit Plus in long shackle format steps the security up substantially. Solid steel body, hardened shackle, cylinder mechanism that resists picking — it's the specification that makes sense when the chain or fitting it's threading through is equally heavy duty.

Combination options are well represented here too. The Squire CP60 recodable combination padlock is a useful product for shared access points — storage areas, site compounds, communal gates — because the code can be changed without replacing the lock when access needs to be revoked. The Master Lock 175 and Squire CP40 cover lighter-duty combination requirements where a key isn't practical or the application doesn't justify the higher price point.

One note on chain pairing: a long shackle padlock threaded through a lightweight chain is still only as secure as the chain. If the installation warrants a quality padlock, it usually warrants a hardened steel chain to go with it.
